Philadelphia Flyers Top Prospects

A look at the Philadelphia Flyers top prospects heading into the 2015-16 season. The write ups for the Flyers prospects are from mid-season, updating the progress of some of the Flyers top prospects.

Shayne Gostisbehere: Defenseman - 5'11" / 160
Drafted: 78th overall to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2012

Shayne Gostisbehere has quickly emerged as a dark horse candidate for the Calder Trophy for the 2015-16 season. His on-ice vision and offensive prowess have helped him quickly accumulate 17 points in 26 games since being called up on November 14th.

He doesn't play a physical defensive game and instead beats teams with his speed. His NHL arrival may have come sooner had he not opted to stay at Union College. His tendency to join the rush, however, can sometimes leave the defense vulnerable.

He has been slotted as a third pairing defenseman but has the potential to become a top-4 defenseman, provided he continues on his current pace. Look for Gostisbehere to finish out the season with Philadelphia in his current role and challenge for a top-4 role by the 2016-17 season.

Ivan Provorov: Defenseman - 6'1" / 201
Drafted: 7th overall to the Philadelphia Flyers in 2015

Provorov, much like Gostisbehere, has above average offense abilities for a defenseman. He has a great shot from the point and can join forwards for a quick attack on the rush. Provorov plays with more of an edge to his game than Gostisbehere and can occasionally lay a hard hit on an opponent.

Provorov has been impressive so far for the Brandon Wheat Kings this year, posting 33 points (9 goals, 24 assists) in 34 games. He was also invited to join Team Russia at the World Junior Championships where he posted 8 assists in 7 games.

Provorov will finish the year in juniors, but look for him to challenge for a roster spot at the beginning of the 2016-17 season.

Travis Konecny: Center - 5'10" / 175
Drafted: 24th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2015

Konecny is a small, yet offensively gifted center with a quick release. He is a fast skater and is developing at a rapid rate.

Konecny captained the Ottawa 67's, posting 45 points (7 goals, 38 assists) in 29 games, before being traded to Sarnia. He was also invited to join Team Canada at the World Junior Championships where he scored 2 points (1 goal, 1 assist) in 5 games.

His size could be a factor but if he puts on weight, there is no reason why Konecny could not be an effective NHL forward. He projects as a top-6 forward but look for him to potentially challenge for a top-9 spot at the beginning of the 2016-17 season.
