Minnesota Wild Top Prospects
A look at the Minnesota Wild top prospects heading into the 2015-16 season. The write ups for the Wild prospects are from mid-season, updating the progress of some of the Wild top prospects.
Mike Reilly: Defence - 5'11" / 156
Drafted: 98th overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2011
Acquired: Signed as a free agent in 2015
Reilly was this past summer's hot college free agent after electing not to sign with Columbus. Reilly was a Hobey Baker finalist and was a member of Team USA for the World Championship.
He was expected to walk onto the Wilds top four defence pairings and contribute immediately. Reilly has only played in four games in the NHL this year and has not recorded a point yet.
He was sent to the AHL where he has provided some offence with five goals and 18 points in 35 games, but is a minus -28 on a terrible Iowa team.
While it is prudent to tap the breaks on expectations for Reilly, he is by no means a bust, and being in the AHL is precisely where he belongs as he continues to develop and adjust to the pro game.
Louis Belpedio: Defence - 5'11" / 193
Drafted: 80th overall to the Minnesota Wild in 2014
Belpedio is having another solid year for Miami in the NCAA as a sophomore.
His profile has been slowly rising, but took a big leap forward as he was named to team USA for the WJC where he helped lead the American attack with his breakout passes, and puck possession.
While under sized, he also showed he can handle the physical game and was responsible in his own zone.
Zack Mitchell: Right Wing - 6'0" / 185
Acquired: Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2014
Mitchell went undrafted in the NHL and returned for his overaged season of Junior with the Guelph Storm. He enjoyed a breakout season and was signed by the Wild.
His rookie season in the AHL was also a success as his stock continued to rise as a late bloomer. In his sophomore AHL season, he continues to progress with 13 goals and 21 points in 41 games.
Mitchell is a smart, two-way player who has a low ceiling, but would make an excellent bottom six forward.
