Los Angeles Kings Top Prospects

A look at the Los Angeles Kings top prospects heading into the 2015-16 season. The write ups for the Kings prospects are from mid-season, updating the progress of some of the Kings top prospects.

Adrian Kempe:
Left Wing - 6'2" / 187
Drafted: 29th overall to the Los Angeles Kings in 2014

The Kings top prospect made the jump to North America at the end of last season and helped Manchester Monarchs to a Calder Cup Championship.

Kempe is having a strong rookie season with the Ontario Reign, scoring eight goals and 18 points in 27 games.

Kempe also helped raise his profile with a strong showing at the WJC on team Sweden, scoring three goals and eight points in seven games.

He has all the tools to be a successful NHL player and the Kings will soon be in desperate need of talented players on entry level contracts. Expect his NHL debut soon.

Spencer Watson: Right Wing - 5'10" / 170
Drafted: 209th overall to the Los Angeles Kings in 2014

Watson garnered some attention with his strong offensive and goal scoring abilities in the Team Canada selection camp and in the OHL All-Stars games with three goals in two games against Russia. Watson was one of the final cuts for team Canada however, but he continues to be the offensive driving force with the Kingston Frontenacs.

Kingston recently acquired New York Islanders top prospect Michael Dal Colle to provide Watson with some offensive support and the duo have been dynamic and have instant chemistry.

With skilled line mates, Watson is proving to be a reliable offensive threat and could be a steal with the 209th selection.

Michael Mersch: Left Wing - 6'2" / 198
Drafted: 110th overall to the Los Angeles Kings in 2011

Mersch is having a breakout sophomore season in the AHL with 13 goals and 20 points in 23 games for the Ontario Reign this season.

Mersch also made his NHL debut this season and has played in 15 games with the Kings, scoring his first career NHL goal.

Mersch is not far from being a regular in the Kings lineup, but projects more as a bottom six forward and is described as a typical Los Angeles King player.

Derek Forbort: Defence - 6'4' / 212
Drafted: 15th overall to the Los Angeles Kings in 2010

As expected, Forbort was given the opportunity to make his NHL debut and was a regular in the Kings roster for most of the season averaging 11:00 minutes a night and scoring his first career NHL goal.

The Kings acquired veteran defender Luke Schenn and subsequently sent Forbort to the AHL to open a roster spot for Schenn.

Barring injury, expect Forbort to remain in the AHL for the balance of the season. Schenn is a free agent come July first and Forbort could make his full time return to the Kings roster come next season.
