Detroit Red Wings Top Prospects

A look at the Detroit Red Wings Stars top prospects heading into the 2015-16 season. The write ups for the Red Wings prospects are from mid-season, updating the progress of some of the Red Wings top prospects.

Dylan Larkin: Centre - 6'1" / 190
Drafted: 15th overall to the Detroit Red Wings in 2014

The Red Wings are well known for over cooking their prospects, citing the NHL is not a developmental league and that all their prospects spend a few years in the AHL. That theory has its exceptions of course, and Dylan Larkin is an exceptional player.

After dominating last season in the NCAA before turning heads for Team USA at the World Championships, Larkin walked into a top six role in the NHL with the Red Wings this season, and has not looked out of place.

In 41 games to date this season he has 29 points and is in the running for the Calder Trophy as the NHL rookie of the year.

He is the next generation of Detroit Red Wings first line centre following Steve Yzerman and Pavel Datsyuk, and he is just getting started. Great things are coming for Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings.

Anthony Mantha: Right/Left Wing - 6'5" / 214
Drafted: 20th overall to the Detroit Red Wings in 2013

Last summer there was some suggesting that it would be Mantha who skipped the AHL apprenticeship and jumped straight to the NHL from the CHL.

An unfortunate broken leg suffered during training camp derailed that notion and he struggled for the remainder of his rookie season in the AHL, scoring only 33 points in 62 games. After a very disappointing season, Mantha has rebounded in his sophomore season with 23 points in 28 games and has been impressive since training camp.

After achieving a goal a game pace in his final season in the CHL, Mantha has seen his stock fall after his first season as a pro, but he is a prospect on the rebound and seems to be making the adjustment to the pro game and has his game back on track. Mantha could be patrolling the Wing in Detroit as early as next season.

Evgeni Svechnikov: Left Wing - 6'2" / 199
Drafted: 19th overall to the Detroit Red Wings in 2015

Svechnikov had a breakout draft year, scoring 78 points in 55 games for the Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL. He is tearing it up offensively again in Cape Breton this year with 39 points in 27 games, but was held pointless for Russia during the WJC in seven games.

While his point production in the Q is impressive, his performance at the WJC does raise some red flags about whether he can be productive in the pro level.

As a one dimensional offensive player, he absolutely must be productive on the score sheet to be a relevant player. Expect him to turn pro next season with an audition in Grand Rapids at the end of his junior campaign.
