Carolina Hurricanes Top Prospects

A look at the Carolina Hurricanes top prospects heading into the 2015-16 season. The write ups for the Hurricanes prospects are from mid-season, updating the progress of some of the Hurricanes top prospects.

Noah Hanifin: Defenseman - 6' 3" / 203 lbs
Drafted: 5th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015

Noah Hanifin has lived up to the hype as the best defenseman of the 2015 draft class after being selected by the Hurricanes 5th overall. Hanifin made the Hurricanes roster straight out of training camp, electing not to return to Boston College for his sophomore season.

He's played in 40 of the 'Canes 43 games and posted 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists). He has impressed fans and coaches with his vision, skating ability, and presence in his own end. He has spent time on both the 2nd and 3rd pairing and has not look overwhelmed. The sky is the limit with Hanifin.

Although he may not be a guaranteed Calder Trophy nominee, a Norris Trophy a few years down the road is not out of the question.

He could join Faulk on the top pairing as early as next season, getting tougher defensive assignments. Look for Hanifin to finish the remainder of the season with the 'Canes.

Haydn Fleury: Defenseman - 6'3"/ 204 lbs
Drafted: 7th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014

Haydn Fleury has yet to crack the NHL after being drafted by the Hurricanes 7th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, but the Hurricanes have no need to rush the big 6'3" blue-liner. Though he may soon join young defensemen Noah Hanifin, Brett Pesce, and Jaccob Slavin on the blue line as early as next season.

Although Fleury is more of a physical, hard hitting defenseman, his offensive skills have shown this year as he has put up a respectable 25 points (8 goals, 17 assists) in 28 games for the Rebels this season.

Fleury was also selected to join Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Fleury played in 5 games and finished with one assist. Fleury has received high praise from scouts for his skating ability, as well as his ability to check opponents.

He has received comparisons to talented NHL blue-liners Shea Weber and Duncan Keith. Expect to see Fleury join the 'Canes for the 2016-17 season.

Alex Nedeljkovic: Goalie - 5'11"/ 190 lbs
Drafted: 37th overall to the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014

Alex Nedeljkovic could go down as a steal for the Hurricanes who drafted him in the 2nd round (37th overall) in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Nedeljkovic posted a 3.21 GAA and a .907 Save Percentage for the Flint Firebirds in 19 games before being traded to Niagara, where he's posted a 1.59 GAA and a .939 Save Percentage.

He was selected to join Team USA and started all games for the red, white, and blue finishing with an astounding 1.66 GAA and a .943% Save Percentage, while leading Team USA to a bronze medal.

Nedeljkovic has the potential to be a number one starter for the 'Canes but will most likely begin his pro career with Charlotte (AHL) next season and hone his skills for a season or two.
