JP Hurlbert's Player Profile

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - April 14th: "The University of Michigan commit has a great one-touch shot that he routinely unleashes on the power play. He’s also an exceptionally smart puck-mover who has very little difficulty getting it where it needs to be against players his own age."

Dauton Reimer - The Hockey Writers - March 25th: "His work ethic around the puck was infectious, earning him several grade-A scoring chances. He’s quick, creative, and intense on the forecheck, which has vaulted him to the top of the WHL scoring race earlier this season."

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - March 17th: "He has work to do in the faceoff circle, and that, combined with his sub-6-foot size, results in him being viewed as more of a winger by some (NHL Central Scouting has moved his position from C to LW as well), but he has chipped in on the PK with the Blazers, was given a letter as a newcomer, and has some quiet competitiveness to go with his skill."

Jason Bukala - Sportsnet - March 17th: "He’s one of the top scorers in the entire league (39G-54A) and could end up a lottery pick in the NHL Draft. Hurlbert plays with above average pace and has fantastic puck touch. I have described him as a shooter more than distributor in the past, but now believe he’s capable of doing both well."

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - March 13th: "Hurlbert is tracking for 100 points with Kamloops in his first year of major junior. Leaving the USA Hockey National Team Development Program likely ensured he’d be in the first-round conversation, allowing him to fully highlight his high-end skill. There have been concerns about his play away from the puck, though."

Peter Baracchini - The Hockey Writers - March 10th: "His offensive skillset, shot selection and ability to do damage in the open ice is undeniable. When he’s in control and the puck is on his stick, he’s as skilled as they come. However, I do want more from him with his off-puck play, as there are times where he wavers from being involved in the play."

Smaht Scouting - February 27th: "The data backs the eye test: he leads the North American dataset with 28.6% of passes into dangerous areas, is involved in over half of his team’s offensive transitions at a 71.9% success rate, and holds his own in shotshare despite heavy offensive usage. The concerns around pace, stamina, and defense are real but overemphasized; Hurlbert’s offensive influence, puck demand, and translatable habits make him a clear top-10 talent and a lottery lock, not a late first-rounder."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - February 25th: "As a player who is extremely confident in his abilities, he can be guilty of passing up the simple play to try and execute a more difficult one. It's easy to see why because he has an array of offensive tools. Hurlbert’s decision to leave the USNTDP to play for Kamloops was the right move at the right time."
