Carson Carels's Player Profile

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - April 14th: "He’s built like a tank – he’s a farm kid who raises hundreds of cattle. Carels’ defensive awareness, two-way skill, strong physique and high-end hockey sense make him truly high-end."

Will Scouch - Scouching.ca - April 13th: "I’m often very scared of how flat-footed and inactive Carels can be on defensive transitions, something that is often borne out in the data, but the way he monitors his lane to the net, closes gaps to opponents and erases players with physical energy is really strong, and definitely projectable."

Dauton Reimer - The Hockey Writers - March 25th: "Back with the Prince George Cougars, he has a similar impact, running the team from the blue line, directing plays like a general, and always knowing when to activate to push the play against the opponent. With his skills and intelligence, he’s set up for a long, successful career, no matter what role he’s given."

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - March 17th: "Carels is an all-around defenseman who plays the game firmly and directly in all three zones and on both sides of the puck. His game is more about instinct than being super cerebral, and he can be a little sloppy at times with his stick placement/closeouts/decisions on the puck, but he's quite toolsy and looks like a pro in a lot of ways."

Jason Bukala - Sportsnet - March 17th: "He’s an elite skater who projects as a two-way defenceman at the NHL level. I appreciate how hard Carels competes and pushes back physically when required. He’s hard to play against in his own zone, and is equally difficult to defend against in the offensive zone."

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - March 13th: "He plays north of 25 minutes every single night, can generate offense (with an excellent shot, to boot) while being defensively responsible. Carels could be a top-pairing defender in the long run."

Peter Baracchini - The Hockey Writers - March 10th: "He’s strong with his one-on-one coverages, standing up to players and being aggressive to knock them off the puck. He’s effective on the breakouts with the ability to transport the puck smoothly and make strong heads up plays in the offensive zone with his playmaking or puck placement on net for a shot or second opportunity."

Smaht Scouting - February 27th: "He has the skill and mobility to influence play, yet too often he fades from the game, defaulting to d-to-d passes in transition and showing limited presence at the defensive blue line. While he isn’t consistently active in either offensive or defensive transition, there are flashes where his timing and execution in both areas are effective when he chooses to assert himself."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - February 25th: "He’s a field general out on the ice, taking charge of important situations. His family farming background speaks to the work ethic he displays on and off the ice. Carels continues to be leaned on in all key situations and has produced elite level offence in junior."

Tony Ferrari - The Hockey News - February 23rd: "His physicality is nice, and he plays a sound positional game in his own end. He is involved in a good amount of offense, but instead of being the one to create the chance, he's often a facilitator who helps get the puck to the truly dangerous players."
