Tom Willander's Player Profile

Chris Peters - Flo Hockey - June 7th: "He’s a talented two-way defenseman who is much better in the defensive end. His skating is among the best for defensemen in this draft and while he doesn’t have high-end offensive upside, he moves pucks well enough and can make the odd play."

Tony Ferrari - The Hockey News - June 5th: "Willander is an excellent skater who reads play at a highly efficient level at both ends of the ice. His defensive game is predicated on his combination of using his mobility to close in on attackers, his excellent stick to strip the puck, and the mindset to instantly move the puck up ice to start the offensive rush."

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - June 5th: "He’s a strong-in-all-three-zones two-way defenceman who plays a confident and decisive game that uses his beautiful, balanced skating to push forward or fall back onto his heels and outlet the puck. He pulls away or retreats from pressure with ease and excels on exits."

Chris Peters - Flo Hockey - June 1st: "While he did not showcase a particularly high-end offensive toolkit, he is a tremendous skater and high-end defender. Willander can be physical and has a good defensive stick. Additionally, his footwork is such that he’s difficult to beat wide."

Corey Pronman - The Athletic - May 30th: "He has a quick, powerful skating stride and can push the pace up ice with the puck. Willander's skating allows him to close on checks well and be a quality defender especially when combined with the fact he has some physicality in his game."

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - May 29th: "Willander has been one of the biggest risers in the top 60 for me, and I think he still has quite a bit of room to improve. He could be a nice pickup for a team that’s already in a contention window."

Jason Bukala - Sportsnet - May 5th: "More deception and confidence when making plays and directing pucks on goal from range. Active defender. Smart. Reliable. Not a physical player, but not shy about battling for pucks and boxing out opponents around his net."
