Joseph Veleno's Player Profile

Kevin Wickersham Dobber Prospects - July 14th: "Veleno has already achieved something only the greats have done, joining John Tavares and Connor McDavid as the lone forwards granted exceptional status by Team Canada, thus permitted to enter two years ago at age 15 into major junior play. In this time with the Saint John Sea Dogs, he’s proven an offensive dynamo who elevates teammates with fantastic playmaking, sharp awareness, and a high hockey IQ. "

Future Considersations - July: "Veleno is an offensively smart, creative, center…explosive skater…quick feet, powerful stride and impressive agility…very athletic…has solid Hockey IQ, impressive vision and playmaking ability…finds seams quickly and is able to create offense for both himself and his linemates…can stickhandle the puck in a phone booth and dance around the offensive zone with strong puck skills…great in tight and able to come out of scrums and corners with the puck…a decent shot that’s accurate, but needs to improve on velocity"

Corey Pronman ESPN - June 25th: "Veleno is a highly skilled player who can make plays beyond his years due to his hands and speed. He couples that with a good power game. The concerns I've heard about him in the industry are whether his talent is elite enough to be a game-changer, but I've been quite impressed whenever I've scouted him."

Mike Morreale NHL.com - June 24th: "Veleno was the first player from the QMJHL to be granted exceptional player status and was drafted No. 1 by Saint John in 2015. He has 83 points (26 goals, 57 points) in 107 games during two seasons with Saint John, including 40 points (13 goals, 27 assists) in 45 games in 2016-17.

"I don't know if his game has come where a lot of people expected offensively since he's battled injuries, but he's a guy that I'm excited to watch next year," Central Scouting's Troy Dumville said. "He'll have a leadership role and they'll have a veteran team, so next year he'll be the guy, and it'll be fun to see where he takes that team.

"Veleno is a highly intelligent kid with a good compete level and a lot of confidence."
