Dakota Mermis's Player Profile

A smaller defenceman, Dakota Mermis left the University of Denver this year to join the OHL's London Knights and it seems to have been a great decision. Mermis has been a steady stay-at-home defenceman for the Knights, much like that of captain Scott Harrington and graduating blueliner Tommy Hughes, a great complement to the offensive flair of Olli Maatta. He skates really well and he employs a decent shot. Mermis has found himself used in several situations for the Knights and, despite his youth, he has given the team significant leadership. With fellow 2013 NHL Draft hopeful Nikita Zadorov, he has given London optimism for their future on the blueline, especially with Harrington's departure. Mermis keeps his game relatively simple and he has taken what he has learned from the defensive-minded NCAA and parlayed it into OHL success. There is every reason to believe that, as time passes, he could become more of a two-way defenceman, as Mermis has shown incredible offensive instincts. He is a solid penalty killer and he is going to be relied upon in that role yet again next year. He plays with a physical tenacity that belies his smaller stature and he does his job every night with no complaints or fanfare.
