Matt Finn Profile

Matt Finn
Ht/Wt: 6' 0" /200 lbs
Position: D
Team: Guelph (OHL)

Matt Finn's Player Profile

A graduate of the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midgets organization, Matt Finn was chosen 12th overall by the Guelph Storm in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection, after a 57-point season which saw him score 22 goals. The Storm knew at the time that they were in the process of losing two of their most experienced defencemen in 2010-11 (Sam Lofquist and Chris Van Laren), as well as losing two more of their top defencemen in 2011-12 (Kyle Pereira and Stephen Gaskin), Finn was seen as a welcome replacement, one with equal offensive and defensive acumen. Although a first-round pick in the OHL Draft, Finn had to bide his time among the older blueliners in Guelph. He did manage to have a decent rookie campaign, one that saw him score 21 points (three goals, 18 assists) in 60 games; he also tallied 23 penalty minutes. Finn represented Ontario at the World Under-17s that year and he scored a goal in the tournament en route to helping the team win gold. Storm head coach Scott Walker recognized leadership in Finn and he named the young blueliner an assistant captain for home games. As a second-year player, Finn led the Storm's defence corps with 47 points (ten goals, 37 assists) in 61 games; his ten goals were tied with Andrey Pedan for tops among the team's blueliners. He also had 58 penalty minutes, as well. Finn truly thrived on special teams in 2011-12, half of his goals coming on the powerplay and one of them being a shorthanded goal. Unless he sticks in the NHL in 2012-13, he will be the quarterback on the Storm's defence yet again. Finn has a great shot which will only get stronger as he gets older; he is also has a solid stride and he should get consideration for the top two rounds due to his all-around play.
