Mathis Preston's Player Profile

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - April 14th: "Preston does a good job of getting to the middle of the ice to redirect chances and take space away. I’ve liked him more in the showcase events (Hlinka, CHL USA Prospects Challenge), which shows he can rise to the occasion when needed."

Will Scouch - Scouching.ca - April 13th: "Preston has star upside, and every time I hear him speak and play hockey, I still see a potential regen of William Nylander there. The skill, speed, confidence, dual-threat offensive output, dominance of the neutral zone offensively, and underrated competitive nature are things to bet on to say the least."

Dauton Reimer - The Hockey Writers - March 25th: "Over the course of the season, however, Preston has returned to earth, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t still an intriguing prospect with a lot of skill. He is a speedy forward with a highly active stick who uses it to break up plays and create turnovers, has plenty of creativity, and hustles on the backcheck."

Scott Wheeler - The Athletic - March 17th: "Preston is a shifty skater who attacks inside ice laterally but can also play out wide. He has slick handles on the puck and can attack off the rush or inside the offensive zone, challenging defenders one-on-one. He has a dangerous shot and a quick release."

Jason Bukala - Sportsnet - March 17th: "It’s taken some time for Preston to get his footing, but he’s looked more like himself lately, a tenacious and energetic forward who produces offence. I’m assuming he will be part of Team Canada at the U18 Worlds next month in Slovakia, and I’m intrigued to see how he finishes his year."

Steven Ellis - Daily Faceoff - March 13th: "Once viewed as a potential top-10 pick, Preston left scouts wanting more in Spokane, and then he got injured shortly after joining Vancouver. Still, there’s a ton to like about his game, and he could end up being an excellent value pickup here. Preston does a good job of getting to the middle of the ice to redirect chances and take space away."

Peter Baracchini - The Hockey Writers - March 10th: "When he’s at his best, he’s an absolute speed demon on the ice as he displays great foot speed, agility and deceptive movement. He’s tough to contain as he can get out of trouble and cut to the middle easily. However, when he isn’t going, that’s when the lulls come as he struggles to produce and create opportunities, as he’s more of a finisher than a creator."

Smaht Scouting - February 27th: "His ability to saucer pass is excellent and he loves to create plays by constantly moving and shifting while using give-and-go’s to drag defenders out of position and open up space for himself and his teammates. With his speed and skill, he only creates more options and lanes to do this, and he is always a threat when on the ice this season."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - February 25th: "At his best, Preston brings great puck-handling skills and speed to the table, he’s strong on his skates, as he leans to the offensive side. The question is: how elite is his offence, and when it's not present, will he check well enough to be able to maintain minutes in an NHL lineup as a top two-line player?"

Tony Ferrari - The Hockey News - February 23rd: "Preston has the tools of an elite scorer, and despite his size, he's stepped up in big moments, whether in overtime or in a clutch moment for his team. Preston's underlying numbers have been stellar, particularly in transition this season, and that's a role that can be very valuable at the next level."
