Myles Bell's Player Profile

Myles Bell is a good sized defensive prospect, capable of scoring goals in bunches and laying out opponents with spectacular checks. Bell logs upwards of 23 minutes per game with the Pats, and is found on the ice in all situations, particularly special teams; he can run a Power Play, has a powerful and fairly accurate point shot and is an effective penalty killer.

His versatility has led to his occasional use as a forward, much like Dustin Byfuglien was in Chicago, but this has created some concerns as Bell’s play may have suffered somewhat for it. This appears to be primarily a coaching issue: Bell is occasionally caught too far up ice after a turnover, or worse, may cause one if he ends up leading the rush and makes a pass to a player who he expects to be there but isn’t. He will also sometimes revert to his forward positioning when he should be in a more defensive location, but under a more consistent coaching scheme, Bell should be able to establish himself in one role or the other.

He is unafraid of physical play and defends himself and his teammates capably. His skating speed is slightly above average, and when he is focused on one role, he shows enough confidence in his game in order to make the more daring play. When his team is losing or he is uncertain of his position, however, his gambles can end up in the back of his own net. Bell projects as a 1st or 2nd pairing defenseman/power play specialist, capable of 30-40 points in the right NHL system.
