Alan Quine's Player Profile
Blessed with great vision and soft hands that made him a second-overall pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection ahead of all but Daniel Catenacci, Alan Quine has the ability, when given the opportunity, to be a gamebreaker. Quine may not be the biggest player on the ice but he works hard each and every shift. He did not have the offensively productive season he had anticipated as an OHL rookie with the Kingston Frontenacs in 2009-10, despite scoring the team's first goal of the season in his OHL debut against the Niagara IceDogs. His play from the puck was worrisome at the start of his OHL career but, after playing for Team Ontario at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, his confidence rose and he finished the season off on a good note, including his first OHL career hat trick the day before his 17th birthday against the Oshawa Generals. Quine returned to the Frontenacs with the optimism of having a great sophomore season, his draft year, but he found his offensive production slide, not scoring for the first month of the new season. When Kingston made a push for Boston Bruins draft pick Ryan Spooner from Peterborough, it was apparent that Quine could possibly be in a package deal heading to the Petes; that came to fruition in November when he and defenceman Clark Seymour were traded to the Petes for Spooner and blueliner Jeff Braithwaite. Quine's offensive production superlatively picked up after the trade and he hit the 20-goal plateau for the first time in his young career. One positive attribute about Quine's game is that he does not take many penalties; he accumulated only eight penalty minutes in each of his first two OHL seasons. His defensive play, however, needs some work; he was a -35 in 2010-11, something that should improve as the team around him does as well. Quine's physicality is starting to pick up but that is not his game. He is a goal scorer and playmaker. He will fit into the Detroit Red Wings' system quite nicely.Submitted by: Submitted by: Margann Laurissa
