Spencer Martin's Player Profile
It is incredible to think just how quickly Spencer Martin has become one of the better goalies in the OHL. Used sparingly as a rookie, Martin became the go-to guy between the pipes for the newly-christened Mississauga Steelheads this past season and he has shown that he is capable of becoming a premier junior goalie. Martin has great positioning, including a tight butterfly, which makes him look quite big in the crease. He challenges shooters very well and he is developing a keen sense of tracking the puck. He follows the play very closely and he is becoming more active as his confidence increases. So many "star" goalies are graduating from the OHL this coming season and Martin is expected to be one of the best of the returning group, if not the #1. He could make a case to be chosen for Canada's World Junior team if he continues the steady improvement that he has demonstrated this year. Martin has good rebound control and is very strong in his net. With some key defencemen graduating this year, however, Martin is going to be counted upon even more to solidify things in Mississauga's back end. He should not try anything too fancy just yet but, as time passes, his abilities will propel him and the Steelheads to great things.Submitted by: Margann Laurissa - May 28th 2013
