Mason Geertsen's Player Profile
The Vancouver Giants got a substantial return for trading David Musil early in the 2012/13 season, the centrepiece of which was Mason Geertsen - a 6'4, 200lbs defenceman who played over 30 games as a 16 year-old with the WHL-champion Edmonton Oil Kings. There aren't many secrets to Geertsen's game - he uses his imposing height effectively to protect the front of the net, and already has impressive strength to match. He relishes the physical game, and even at age 17 his 130PIM were good for 17th in the WHL, and 7th among defencemen. His puck moving skills and overall quickness need more development - but overall his skating isn't a liability, and he'll be given every opportunity to improve all facets of his game. As such, he's something of a work in progress, but his physical tools are so well suited to the professional game that he won't be passed over for long on draft day. Overall, he projects as a physical stay-at-home defenceman, with enough mobility to play in a variety of game situations.Submitted by: Ken Hawkins
