Ryan Ellis's Player Profile

Submitted by: HockeyProspect.com - This guy has certainly made scouts stand up and take notice. Is only 5’10”, 173 lbs, but played extremely well in his rookie campaign, with 15 goals and 63 points in 63 games. Quarterbacked the Windsor power play and has racked up many of his points on it. Has a good hockey IQ, anticipates the play very well and has a rocket of a shot.

He has actually gotten a lot better than he was last season, which is saying a lot. Has 8 goals and 22 points in 13 games, good for 2nd place in OHL scoring behind Tavares.

This guy is an excellent passer and despite his size is not been over-powered along the boards and in high traffic areas. He does need to get stronger in his upper body, but has been very solid with a well-rounded game.

Has played well on the defensive side and understands good positioning is how he can compete with bigger bodies. Consequently, he uses his body well to keep the puck from opponents. He makes sound, solid decisions, but has taken a little more risk than last season, with amazing results. He may not be able to keep up his current points pace, but he is a definite high level prospect who thinks the game at a very high level. We like him a lot.

Submitted by: Jim Van Horne - If Ellis was three inches taller, we'd be talking top five. He keeps answering doubts as many didn't even think he was big enough for Canadian junior hockey. He has tremendous puck sense and a lot of confidence. He can either make a great pass from the blueline on the power play or use a great shot. Defensively, he'll have to learn to use smart positioning, quickness and a strong stick but comparisons to Brian Rafalski are not totally out of the question.
